Matt was born Aug, 11, 1975, in Little Rock, to Mary Celia Matthews Johnson and the late James E. Johnson. His grandparents were the late James Everett (Jim) and Mini Sandoval Matthews of Little Rock, and the late Elwin N. Johnson and Thaddesse B. Johnson of Sheridan.
Matt attended Walnut Valley Christian Academy, and graduated from Hall High School in 1993.
He attended the University of Arkansas at Little Rock where he majored in mass communications and was sports editor of the UALR Forum. He also did freelance sports photography for the Arkansas Democrat Gazette. Matt also worked at the Little Rock Humane Society and the Arkansas Emergency Veterinary Service. He was currently employed by the Little Rock Diagnostic Clinic as a patient services rep. At LRDC, he was a valued and well-loved employee. Many patients remember Matt at the LRDC because of his cat pictures on the walls of his reception desk.
He is survived by his mother, his sister, Jaime Combs (Curtis) of Little Rock, his nephew, Daniel Johnson of Little Rock, and many cousins in the United States and Mexico. He identified as a “Cat Daddy”, because of his four feline children—Olive, Meep, Lola, and Atticus.
Matt was beloved by his family and friends. He could always make time to give someone a ride, or help someone out.
He was a member of St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Little Rock.
Memorials may be made to the Pulaski County Humane Society.
Memorial Services will be 3:00 PM Friday, January 30, 2026 at Griffin Leggett Healey & Roth with visitation one hour prior to the service, 2:00 PM.
Matt will be laid to rest at Lost Creek Cemetery in Sheridan at a later date.
