Born on February 22, 1942 to the late Frank and Mary (Sharpe) Gulla, Bill followed his calling to God, entering into the Huntington Seminary directly following his high school graduation. A true humanitarian, Bill later found his calling to God was better demonstrated as service to others, most notably: His passion for spreading peace as demonstrated during times spent with the Berrigan Brothers and the Catholic Worker; enriching the lives of special needs children as a practicing social worker in New York State public schools, and delivering left over pizza to the homeless persons of Little Rock. Bill was most proud of his work as a social worker for Hospice in both New York and Arkansas, retiring after the dedication of over 30 years of his life to the council of others.
Bill will be fondly remembered for his calming presence and selfless demeanor. A natural peacemaker and counselor, he was always prepared to offer support and guidance to those in need. Beyond his humanitarian efforts, Bill was a passionate environmentalist who strove to make the world a better place for the generations ahead of his own. In his retirement, Bill relished his daily walks in which he became the “mayor” of the neighborhood, cultivating wonderful friendships as time went on.
Bill is survived in life by his balancing half and loving wife-partner of thirty years, Dr. Elizabeth C. Gath; his best creation and daughter, Heidimarie Gath, and devoted sister, Frances Waller Robertson. Those left to celebrate his beautiful memory are comforted by thoughts of Bill taking daily walks with his beloved Bichon Frisés, Sierra and Edelweiss, ready with a waive of the hand, warm smile, and “Hiya!” for any passers by.
The family would like to extend special gratitude to Rev. Carol-Ann Blow, the members of Sr. Thea Bowman Congregation, Westover Hills Presbyterian Church, and the Neighbors of Winthrop Point.
