Born in Newark on January 30, 1934 to Harry and Iris Shapiro, Arthur was a graduate of Weequahic High School. After short stints at two universities, Arthur enlisted in the Army where he learned about 'the care and cleaning of his weapons,' how to box like a pro, and how to cook. Although he never picked up a gun again after his honorable discharge in 1955, he was fabulous with a spatula.
Arthur was fortunate to meet his soulmate, Gloria (nee Weiss), while they were in high school. They were married in 1955 and subsequently purchased a home in Livingston after the arrival of their daughter, Gail. He learned the family business, A & S Furniture, from the bottom up, first under the auspices of his father Harry and older brother Sandy, and later with his wife. They were fortunate to retire early, and lived happily until Gloria's untimely death in 1993, after 38 years of marriage.
Arthur willfully remained in the family home until his passing.
Arthur is survived by his loving daughter Gail Spencer, and his beloved grandchildren Shaine, Zachary and his wife Jessica, and Tess.
