On May 5th, 2020, Barbara Diane Edinger Dobro, loving wife of Murray Dobro and mother of three, passed away at the age of 87. She was a resident of Livingston, NJ for many years before moving to Crane’s Mill in West Caldwell.
Barbara was born on January 23, 1933, in Boston, MA, to Irving and Sarah (Cohen) Edinger. After excelling at Boston Latin School, she received her bachelor’s degree from Boston University. She taught kindergarten and braille and was the comptroller of the family food brokerage business, JCS Sales, for over 40 years. On June 16, 1953, she married Murray Saul Dobro, and together they raised Jeffrey, Carrie and Stuart Dobro.
A fantastic bridge player throughout her life, Barbara was also a proud winner of a golf tournament at Maplewood Country Club, where she began learning the game well into her middle age. She was a voracious reader with an enviable vocabulary and could play a mean game of Scrabble and Casino. Barbara had a deep love of music (especially opera) and loved a good Cape Cod lobster roll followed by a mocha chocolate chip ice cream cone—but she couldn’t whistle (despite the persistent help of her granddaughters) and couldn’t tolerate anyone wearing the color olive green—even if she loved you. Barbara was intensely loyal to her friends and family and dearly loved and supported every one of them no matter what.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Murray, her father, Irving and her mother, Sarah. She is survived by her three children, Jeff (Candace), Carrie (Mark) and Stuart; her two granddaughters, Sarah and Dolyn (Zach); a granddog (Sherman) and several cousins. A graveside funeral will be held for the immediate family only on May 8. Bernhiem-Apter-Kreitzman is the funeral provider handling all details.
Donations may be sent in memory of Barbara to National Council for Jewish Women, https://www.ncjw.org/ and Papermill Playhouse, https://my.papermill.org/donate/contribute1.
