Born on March 31, 1949, in Brooklyn, New York, Gary was the son of Alan and Blanche Arcus and the younger brother of Tally Fleishman, who survives him. He graduated from Stuyvesant High School and later earned his degree from the City College of New York before building a long career with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Over 30 years, Gary rose from engineer to Assistant Chief Financial Officer, bringing intelligence, precision, and dedication to his work.
But to those who knew him best, Gary was far more than his resume. He was a devoted husband to Marilyn Arcus, with whom he shared more than five decades of marriage after marrying on June 17, 1972. Together they built a life grounded in loyalty, humor, and family.
Gary was the father of Josh Arcus and an adoring grandfather to Caleb and Theadora, who brought him enormous pride and joy.
He loved golden retrievers, opera, movies, and television — especially romantic comedies, which he seemed to appreciate with an expertise few would have expected from a Brooklyn engineer. He always had a recommendation ready, usually accompanied by a strong opinion and delivered with the perfectly timed dry wit that defined him.
Gary leaves behind a family who will miss his humor, intelligence, loyalty, and steady presence immensely.
