Loving Family Man, Friend and Advocate for the Developmentally Disabled
A Life of Advocacy, Independence, and Family
Gregory B. Felzenberg, aged 63, passed away peacefully on December 26, 2025. Born on July 7, 1963, in New Jersey, Gregory spent his formative years in South Orange before relocating with his family to Short Hills in 1974. At the age of 22, Gregory joined Community Access Unlimited (CAU) and became a resident of their Supportive Living Residential Program, living in Hillside and Elizabeth, New Jersey.
Family and Personal Legacy
Gregory was predeceased by his parents, Leonard and Lois Felzenberg; his sister, Lauren Felzenberg; his uncle and aunt, Mike and Sheila Kronisch; and his aunt, Roberta Madorsky. He is survived by his devoted brother and guardian, James E. Felzenberg; his niece, Lisbeth Sara Felzenberg; his uncle, Dr. Erwin Madorsky; his aunt, Nancy Vines; and many cousins, including Elizabeth Lessor, Jennifer Benenson, Rebecca Emert, Matthew Kronisch, Lynn Madorsky, and Andrea Madorsky.
Advocacy for People with Disabilities
Born with Down Syndrome, Gregory never allowed his developmental disability to become a barrier to achieving his goals. He actively participated in advocacy groups for people with disabilities in New Jersey and held leadership positions in “Partners in Policy,” a group dedicated to improving the lives of disabled citizens. Gregory worked alongside others to present bills to state leaders, some of which became New Jersey state law, benefiting those with developmental disabilities. Advocacy was a significant aspect of Gregory’s life, and he was proud of his citizenship and right to vote.
Career and Independence
Gregory’s dedication to employment was a testament to his independence. He held various positions at Taco Bell, National Wholesale Liquidators, the CAU Corporate Office, and other organizations. Gregory equated his work with independence, and even during hospital stays, his focus remained on returning to work, exemplifying his commitment and determination. Gregory always said, “get me out of this hospital, get me off this O2 machine… I have work tomorrow!”
Cherished Family Traditions
For Gregory, nothing surpassed the importance of family, friends, and the CAU staff who supported him for nearly 40 years. After the passing of his parents, his brother James became his advocate and guardian, ensuring the continuation of cherished family traditions. American and Jewish holidays were marked by meals prepared by his niece Lisbeth, and family gatherings always included Gregory, whether for birthday dinners at restaurants or home deliveries of holiday food. James and Lisbeth embraced their roles joyfully because of their deep love for Gregory and his love for them.
The Support Network
CAU provided Gregory with the resources and support necessary to achieve maximum independence. Alongside his family, Gregory’s counselors, mentors, and support staff played vital roles in his life. These included Bernadette Griswold (CAU Executive Director), Aisha Arroyo (Senior Associate Executive Director), Residential Directors Jason Donofrio and Altaray Cunningham, and his Support Coordinator and Advocate, Zuleika Almanzar. Zuleika was instrumental in coordinating Gregory’s health needs, employment, and social engagements, always involving Gregory’s family to ensure comprehensive support. Many other individuals also contributed to Gregory’s successful and fulfilling life, and their impact was immeasurable.
A Lasting Impact
Gregory’s life stands as a testament to the potential of developmentally disabled individuals to lead productive, mostly independent lives and to contribute meaningfully to their communities. His achievements, advocacy, and enduring relationships touched many, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A private family funeral service and burial will be held.
