A man of many talents, Herbert (Herb, Hal or Herbie to his friends and family) graduated college with a degree in engineering. During the Korean War, he served his country as a member of the United States National Guard. After the war, he married his high school sweetheart, Lynne Topman, and the newlyweds settled in West Orange, New Jersey. Hal had multiple offers to enter show business (he was an accomplished singer in the “crooner” style of Frank Sinatra) but elected to pursue a career in fashion design and manufacturing. His services were always in great demand, and he designed dresses for numerous luminaries and celebrities.
Hal had a keen and incisive mind and pursued numerous hobbies outside the workplace. He was an inventor, a painter, a dancer, a tinkerer and a philosopher. In his eighties, he became interested in martial arts and earned a brown belt in Taekwondo.
Above all else, Hal treasured his family. His wife Lynne was the light of his life. After her passing, he found love again with his longtime companion and partner, Sheila Kayne. He was absolutely devoted to his two daughters, Vicki Kalmus and Valerie Kolodin, who cherished, adored and cared for him every single day. He treated his son in laws, Michael and Richard, as his own, always dispensing advice about life, business and the art of marriage. He had a special and all-encompassing love for his grandson, Alexander, who loved him fiercely in return. They were best friends and the closest of confidants. Hal was a fixture at every basketball game Alex ever played, every musical performance Alex ever gave and every other milestone event in his life. Hal loved his grandchildren Jesse and Estee Kolodin, Rachael and Josh Feldman, and great grandchildren Asher, Aaron and Shai Feldman.
Funeral services will take place on Sunday, April 24, and will be private. The family will be sitting shiva at Chabad of Short Hills, located at 650 West South Orange Avenue, between the hours of Noon and 4 PM on Sunday and 4-8 PM on Monday.
