

Herman D. Schachtel, 87, of Short Hills, NJ for 60 years passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, January 9, 2017. Born in Newark, Mr. Schachtel graduated from Columbia High School and attended Rider College where he captained the tennis team. He then enlisted in the US Air Force where he served for 49 months. He was a graduate of the US Air Force Flying School, was an instructor in the US Air Force Control Tower School as well as being a controller in a US Air Force Control Tower. Mr. Schachtel then spent 10 years working in the family business, Schachtel’s Bakery, which had been well known in Newark for 50 years. He moved on to do custom home construction and then had a 51 year career as an Insurance Salesman and Broker.
He enjoyed many, many sports, gardening, and automobiles, was an avid deep sea fisherman, a little league coach, and was extremely generous with charitable organizations, especially the Millburn-Short Hills First Aid Squad.
Mr. Schachtel was a member of Congregation B’Nai Israel in Millburn for over 50 years and chaired many committees. He was the past president of the Millburn-Short Hills B’Nai Brith Lodge. He loved his FAMILY, COUNTRY, and ISRAEL.
Beloved husband for 63 years of Evelyn Schachtel, loving father of William and Steven Schachtel, devoted grandfather of Sarah, Rebecca, Alexander, Jordan and Monica, cherished brother of Hermine Hammer.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, or the Millburn-Short Hills First Aid Squad.
