Born in Paterson, NJ to Louis and Helen Rosen, he graduated from the Yavneh Academy, Eastside High School, and Fairleigh Dickinson University. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Toby, daughters Lisa Rosen and Stacy (Steve) Saul, and his adored grandchildren, Abby and Derek. He is also survived by his brother and best friend Saul (Pat) Rosen, his nieces Amy (Chip) Selley and Jill (Dan) Solomon, and his nephew Brian Johnson. He was also loved by his many cousins, in-laws, co-workers, and friends.
Mel worked for decades in the women’s wear industry, spending most of his career at H.I.S. and Levi Strauss. He followed work opportunities, moving with his family to different parts of the country: New Jersey, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and California. He began his second career as a financial advisor, mostly with Merrill Lynch, until his retirement.
His family was all-important. He was a born salesman, humble, funny, kind-hearted, athletic—a real character. He loved skiing, handball, and taking a shvitz at the JCC. He loved taking friends and family to his latest favorite hole-in-the-wall restaurants and ice cream parlors.
He will be loved and missed more than he could have imagined. Services were held and a celebration of his life will occur at a future date. Donations in his memory can be made to the JCC MetroWest (jccmetrowest.org).
