Born in what was then the Carpathian Ruthenia region of Czechoslovakia, Mr. Davis
lived in Czechoslovakia, Israel, Canada, Ohio, New Jersey (twice) and Texas after
surviving service as an impressed laborer during the Second World War. He was
briefly enlisted in what was to become the Israeli Defense Forces while awaiting
immigration to Israel and upon his arrival in Israel.
Upon arrival in the United States, he was trained to work in the delicatessen and
restaurant business and eventually owned three businesses—one in Cleveland, Ohio
and then, in New Jersey. In New Jersey he, first, became the owner of the Lipshitz
and Son Delicatessen and Restaurant in Newark and then the owner of the Deli King
in Linden, New Jersey. He and his wife retired in 1987 to join their children and
grandchildren in Dallas, Texas, returning to New Jersey with the entire family in
1992.
He was a founding member of Temple Israel in Springfield, New Jersey and a
member and contributor to Congregation Ahavath Zion in Maplewood, New Jersey.
His greatest pride was in his family. For 64 years he was the devoted husband
and business partner of Piri Davis, whom he married in Prague in 1948 and who
survives him. He was the beloved father of Gene, Jeffrey and Ronnie, beloved
father-in-law of Stacey, Babette and Linda, proud and loving grandfather of Jordan,
Pamela, Kylie, Jared, Joel, Brandon and Mira and, most recently, the adoring great-
grandfather of Paige and Avery.
Contributions can be made to St. Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Center, the
Jewish Family Service of Greater Metrowest or the US Holocaust Museum.
