Paul Lewinter, MD

Paul Lewinter, MD of Summit, NJ died on November 12th, 2025 at the Inglemoor Rehabilitation Center in Livingston, NJ. He had been a resident of Brandywine Senior Living Facility during the past 3 years. Dr. Lewinter was born on February 23, 1931 to Regina and Arthur Lewinter of Brooklyn, NY, and lived in Brooklyn until graduating from Columbia University and completing medical school and residency at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University. He then completed a gastrointestinal fellowship at Yale University Hospital in New Haven, CT. He had a long and thriving medical practice in Fanwood, NJ until his retirement at 82 years of age. His patients adored him, as evidenced by the many glowing letters he received upon retirement. He absolutely loved practicing medicine and loved his patients.

Dr. Lewinter met and married Shirlee Bubis in 1956. They remained life partners, recently celebrating their 69th wedding anniversary. He was a wonderful father to their three children Riva Lewinter (David), Donna Lewinter (Rob) and Andrew Lewinter (Lauren), and loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed the outdoors and often spent weekends skiing or bicycling. Dr. Lewinter was intensely curious about the world and loved learning about a broad range of subjects. He loved literature and poetry and would frequently awe family and friends with his ability to recite from memory the entirety of a Shakespeare sonnet or a poem. He and Shirlee frequently attended performances at Lincoln Center with close friends.

Dr. Lewinter leaves behind his wife Shirlee, their three children, five grandchildren, two great grandchildren, his brother Melvin (Janet), and many loving nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, Nov 16th, 2025 at 1pm at Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel at 68 Old Short Hills Rd. in Livingston, NJ. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Solomon Schechter Day School at 26 Buena Vista Rd., West Hartford, CT 06107.
