Born and raised in Newark, a proud graduate of Weequahic High School, she received her undergraduate degree from Newark State Teachers College and her master’s degree from Rutgers, New Brunswick. A longtime elementary school teacher, Phyllis taught in Newark, West Orange, and for decades in Irvington. She was also a religious school teacher for 62+ years at Temple B’nai Jeshurun as well as a very long time member, and of its women’s association.
She was the beloved wife of the late Elliott Nelson, cherished mother of Barbara Nelson and Nancy Goldsmith (Howard), treasured grandma of Kara Goldsmith (Mimi) and Jared Goldsmith, loving sister-in-law to Lillian Coopersmith, and dearest aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Donations may be made in Phyllis’ memory to Cong. B’nai Jeshurun or the charity of your choice.
