She was born in Brooklyn, New York, one of eight children of immigrant parents. She married at seventeen in 1939, moved to Farmingdale, New Jersey, and became a farmer’s wife. She and her husband owned a poultry farm until 1958. During those years she helped her husband on the farm while raising their children and working outside the home as a skilled bookkeeper. She retired from Shop Rite Foods as head of payroll and personnel. She was the original liberated woman.
After retiring, she and her husband lived in West Palm Beach, Florida, until 2000 when she moved to Fayetteville.
Sylvia Stroger was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, avid reader, an excellent baker, a life-long Democrat, and a fiercely independent woman. She was a proud and active member of Congregation B’nai Israel in Fayetteville and was the surrogate Jewish mother and grandmother to many of its congregants.
