Claire-Wynne Sobson, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, returned to her heavenly home on Saturday, May 1, 2021. The daughter of Clarence R. and Margaret Fibiger, Claire was born on December 23, 1932, and spent much of her early childhood in Toledo, Ohio. The Fibigers relocated to Michigan, and in 1950 Claire graduated from Redford Union High School. In high school, Claire was a drum majorette and earned a Varsity letter in Debate. She went on to attend the Harper Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1953. She shortly after began her career as an RN, a vocation that reflected her lifelong commitment to serving and helping others. A devout Christian throughout her life, Claire lived her faith in service to the Lord.
On May 26, 1956, Claire married Ronald W. Sobson; they were married for 59 years, until his death in 2015. After living with their young family in Alabama, Pennsylvania, and New York, they returned to Livonia, Michigan, in 1974. In 2019, Claire moved to Independence Village in Plymouth, where she participated in the Bible study group, book club, and exercise classes, and (despite her denials of any computer aptitude) established herself as its most tech-savvy resident. Although she developed increasing vision challenges, Claire continued her avid reading via audiobooks and in 2020 alone read over 60 books.
Claire was the personification of unconditional love; she celebrated and supported the successes of her family and friends, and was a source of strength and comfort to those in need. She is survived and greatly missed by her children, David (Juley) Sobson, Lorraine (Tim Reilly) Sobson, Natalie (Kenneth) Sikora, Carol (Randy Schacht) Sobson, and Deborah (Tom) Karabatakis; grandchildren Mira and Rachel Sobson, Jack and Luke Reilly, Stephanie and Alex Schacht, and Joseph and Adam Karabatakis; and great-granddaughter Ashlyn Lask.
Family and friends may visit on Saturday, May 8, 2021 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Harry J. Will Funeral Home 37000 West Six Mile, Livonia, Michigan 48152.
