Dennis Lee Mefford

He was born on June 8, 1935, in Prentiss, Kentucky.

Dennis was a high school athlete lettering in Track & Field and Football.

In 1954 Dennis enlisted in the Army, where he had the opportunity to play football. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal / Army Occupation Medal (Germany). Dennis spent most of his career working at the Chrysler Mound Road Engine Plant in Warren. In the late 1970’s he also owned and ran Suits-Me Bar.

He loved the outdoors and enjoyed golfing, fishing and annual deer hunting trips with his brothers and friends. After retiring in 1994, he and his adoring wife, Elaine, built their retirement home on Cedar Lake in Oscoda and became “snowbirds” spending nearly 25 winters in Brownsville, Texas. Their love of travel and adventure led them to visit almost all 50 states including Alaska and Hawaii as well as taking a European Viking River Cruise.

Dennis leaves behind by his cherished wife and steadfast companion of 64 years, Elaine (Geisler); 4 children: Kenneth Mefford, Denise (Chuck-deceased) Penrod, Cyndi (Steve) Rapai, Craig Mefford; 4 grandchildren: Jim & Blair Birnie and Ben & Katie Rapai; brother David (Wilma) Kengerski; sister-in-law Ginny Kengerski.

He is preceded in death by his parents: Hazel (Schultz) and Melvin Kerr, Latney (Hedwig) Mefford; siblings Geraldine (Karl) Haapanen, Frances (Bill) Pleimann, Helen Spohn, Donald (Margaret) Kengerski, Hank Kengerski.

As we bid farewell to Dennis, we can raise a glass (Southern Comfort Manhattans & Dirty Martinis were his favorite) and celebrate a life well-lived and a heart well-loved and remember that It’s 5:00 Somewhere!

A committal & Military Honors for Dennis will be held Monday, August 12, 2024 at 2:30 PM at Great Lakes National Cemetery, 4200 Belford Road, Holly, Michigan 48442.
