Eleanor was born at home in Detroit, Michigan, to Elmer and Dorothea (Rebb) Engel. She was baptized into Christ through the rebirth of water and the Spirit at Gethsemane Lutheran Church and confirmed in the faith on April 19, 1948. Later, she became a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Dearborn, where she regularly received God’s gifts of Word and Sacrament. She also served her church as a member of the Ladies Aid and remained closely connected with her church community throughout her life.
On March 1, 1957, Eleanor married Douglas Haller, who preceded her in death in December of 2019. Together, they shared 62 years of marriage and raised four children: Cindy (Dan) Brown, Jeffrey (Sherri) Haller, Timothy (Lisa) Haller, and Karen (David) Sylvester.
She was the grandma of Heather (Jim) Molnar, Adam (Andrea) Haller, Doug (Alicia) Haller, Dan (Ruth) Haller, Becky (Shane) Roedel, Don (Sara) Brown, Lindsay (Simon) Reinke, Lauren (Andrew Szuminski) Sylvester, Ryan (Alicia) Brown, Sara (Jeff) Wickman, Rachel (Curtis) Krallman, Josh (Hannah) Haller, Cathy Evans, Ethan (Merritt) Haller, Matt (Maria Rising) Sylvester, and Caitlin Brown. She was also the great-grandma of Audrey, Gideon, Jimmy, Clara, Joanna, Owen, Gil, Tanner, Reese, Isaak, Vivian, Roy, Natalie, Gabriel, Camryn, Ava, Cash, Margo, Jack, Michael, Fred, Casey, Calvin, Ben, Timmy, Glen, Lily, Phoebe, Summer, and Hazel.
Eleanor was the sister of the late Gordon (Joyce) Engel and Elmer Engel Jr.
In 1966, Eleanor and Doug established Haller Appraisal Service, which continues to this day under family ownership. From the earliest days of the business, Eleanor was deeply involved—keeping the office organized, assisting clients, and supporting the company’s growth. She balanced her work at the firm with raising her family, and her steady commitment kept her active in the business for nearly 60 years, retiring only in April of this year.
Eleanor also valued her quiet time at home. She was an avid reader, with a book often close at hand, and she enjoyed a wide variety of subjects that kept her mind sharp and engaged. She also had a particular fondness for puzzles and could spend hours at a table working patiently to fit each piece into its place. These hobbies were a constant source of enjoyment for her and reflected her focus, determination, and love of keeping her mind active.
