Hilton Harper Turner, Sr., a devoted husband, loving father, cherished grandfather, and community servant, peacefully departed this life on March 15, 2025, at his home in Detroit, Michigan, at the age of 96.
Born on February 25, 1929, in Henderson, Kentucky, Hilton was the son of Andrew and Bertha (Long) Turner, Sr. He was raised with a deep sense of faith, accepting Jesus Christ at the age of nine and being baptized in the Ohio River, Ohio, marking the beginning of his lifelong journey with the Lord. Hilton’s faith, work ethic, and love for his family remained pillars of his character throughout his life.
In 1974, Hilton met the love of his life, Rebecca Whitely, through mutual friends. Their union was one of mutual respect and love, leading to their marriage on November 23, 1974. Together, they shared many wonderful years, building a family and creating memories that will forever be cherished. Hilton and Rebecca traveled across the United States for the annual Turner Family reunions, a highlight of their year that was filled with laughter, love, and unforgettable moments.
Hilton was a proud veteran, serving his country with honor during the Korean War. He served on active duty in the United States Army from September 1952 to July 1954, and later entered the reserves, continuing his service for many years. His commitment to his country was a point of great pride for him, and he dedicated much of his life to public service.
Following his military service, Hilton began a distinguished career as a mail handler for the United States Postal Service. He worked tirelessly for 39 years at the loading docks, retiring in 1993. Hilton’s life was devoted to service — to his country, his community, and his family.
Hilton was also an avid golfer and took great pride in maintaining his home and yard. His perfectly manicured lawn earned him local recognition, even being featured on television for his attention to detail. It was a testament to his dedication and care, qualities that defined so much of who he was.
He leaves behind his cherished and supportive wife of 51 Years, Rebecca Turner. Hilton's family was his greatest treasure. He was the proud father of six children: Catherine Sampson (Alton), Jeffrey (Sonya) Horton, Shelly (Paul) Singleton, Hazel Turner, Hilton (Terri) Turner, Jr., and Roderick (JoAnn) Horton. He was also a beloved grandfather to nineteen grandchildren and a great-grandfather to fifty-six great-grandchildren, as well as one great-great-granddaughter. Hilton’s legacy lives on through his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, all of whom carry forward the values he instilled in them. Also, a host of relatives and friends.
Hilton was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Bertha Turner, Sr.; nine of his siblings and a granddaughter. He leaves behind his surviving siblings, Alma Harris and Loreene Williams, who will remember him with love and fondness.
