Ilene Joanne Starks, born May 23, 1938, in Detroit to Robert and Marcella (Hebert) Drow, passed away on May 14, 2025, just shy of her 87th birthday. Ilene lived a life marked by warmth, kindness, and unwavering love for her family.
Generous of heart and spirit, Ilene was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. She had a quiet wit, a nurturing soul, and a deep affection for life’s simple pleasures. She found joy in watching her favorite TV shows—The Golden Girls and Dr. Pol—and spent countless happy hours birdwatching from her window. Her home was lovingly filled with her cherished collections of Raggedy Ann dolls and frog knick-knacks.
A woman of intelligence and pride, Ilene was a member of M.E.N.S.A. in her younger years, a distinction she held with honor. She also gave her time and heart as the former president of an organization dedicated to helping children with disabilities, a cause that reflected her deep compassion and sense of service.
Ilene’s greatest love was her family, and she was deeply loved in return. She is survived by her children, James Starks, Scott (Colette Richards) Starks, and Sandra (Richard) Derscha; her grandchildren, Elizabeth Starks, Abigail Starks, Evelyn Starks, Bailey Dunsmore, Brandon Starks, Richard (Jessica) Derscha Jr., and Katherine (Andrew Johnson) Derscha; and her great-granddaughter, Violet. She is also survived by her sisters Donna Martin and Lori Deacon.
In addition to her parents, Ilene was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Clyde Starks, and her siblings Judy Winkler and Jeanette Frugia.
Ilene’s family invites those who wish to honor her memory to make a donation to any organization that speaks to your heart and values—a reflection of Ilene’s own generous spirit.
She will be remembered always for her kindness, her love of family, and the gentle joy she brought to the world around her.
