

Jean was the cherished mother of Sheri L. Hanson (Frank), William T. Gabriel (Sabrina), and Dawn M. Gabriel. She was a proud and loving grandmother to Gabrielle Hoppe (Eric), Connor Hanson, Lauren Stoltman Thurber (Cleveland), Jackson C. Gabriel, and Anna L. Gabriel. Jean was also blessed to be the devoted great-grandmother of Bryer H. Hoppe, Berlyn K. Hoppe, Cleveland Thurber V, and Beau Thurber.
She is survived by her dear siblings, Marion D. Tokarchuk (Steve), Richard H. Bryer (Sandra), and Robert A. Bryer (Marjorie). Jean was preceded in death by her sister, Nancy C. Gyllenblad (Henry), and her brother, Raymond A. Bryer (Carolyn). She is also lovingly remembered by many cherished nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Jean graduated from Detroit Lutheran High School in 1955 and went on to earn her nursing degree from Evangelical Deaconess School of Nursing in 1958. She dedicated many years of compassionate service to the nursing profession and retired from St. Mary Mercy Hospital in Livonia. Jean’s caring heart and gentle spirit touched countless lives throughout her career.
A lifelong Lutheran with a steadfast faith in God, Jean was a longtime and devoted member of Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church. She generously volunteered her time at the Livonia Lutheran Home, the Livonia Library, and within her church community. Above all else, Jean treasured her family. She loved vacationing with them, cheering on her children and grandchildren at sporting events, knitting, and spending quiet moments reading.
Jean will be remembered for her unwavering faith, kindness, dedication to others, and the deep love she had for her family.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, May 22, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., with gathering beginning at 10:00 a.m., at Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Family of God, Lutheran World Relief, or Lutheran High School.
