Beloved husband of 62 wonderful years to Sonnia Cummins, his partner through every adventure. Loving father of Debbie Cummins, Melissa (Scott) Fassett, and Jimmy Cummins. Proud and playful grandpa of Ashley Fassett, Christina Fassett, Stephen Cummins, and James Cummins. Dear brother of Linda Meitus.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, James Sr. and Elizabeth Cummins; his brother Jim Cummins; his grandparents Andrew and Susan Pierfelice; his wonderful mother-in-law and father-in-law, Wanda and Steve Kalonick; and his dear sister-in-law Barbara and brother-in-law Larry Darrow.
Jim proudly served in the United States Army, with one year of active duty followed by eight years in the Army Reserves. A deeply patriotic man, he had great respect for his country and those who served it.
He was also a passionate political activist, never one to shy away from a lively debate. Jim had plenty of opinions and even more determination to share them. Whether you agreed with him or not, he made sure you left the conversation thinking.
Jim had many interests and talents: he loved trap shooting, flew remote control airplanes with his RC club, and held several patents thanks to his inventive, can-do spirit. There was almost nothing he couldn't fix—or at least take apart with confidence. A true jack of all trades, he approached everything with curiosity and a touch of mischief.
He adored dogs and treated them like royalty—equal parts companion, confidant, and family member. If you were lucky enough to be one of Jim's dogs, you lived the good life.
He was also the proud President and Founder of the FMC, a title he carried with a great sense of pride and humor, and one his family will fondly remember as uniquely and unmistakably Jim.
Jim was sharp, hilarious, and wonderfully unique. Beneath the sarcasm and bold opinions was a man with a fiercely loyal heart, a love for his family that ran deep, and a knack for making life just a little more interesting.
A funeral visitation for Jim will be held Tuesday, July 22, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Harry J. Will Funeral Home, 37000 W. Six Mile Road, Livonia, Michigan. Visitation will continue Wednesday, July 23, 2025, from 10:00 AM until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 AM, at the same location.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit, in honor of Jim’s lifelong love for dogs.
Jim will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His stories, his laughter, and his unmistakable spirit will live on.
