James “Jim” Schurig, age 81, was born on September 12, 1944, in Detroit, Michigan, to Earl and Geraldine Schurig. He passed away peacefully on February 8, 2026, under the compassionate care of Angela Hospice, surrounded by the love of his family members and friends.
Jim was the beloved husband of Carol, with whom he shared 59 wonderful years of marriage. He was a doting dad to Debra (Marc) Ramsey as well as a cherished grandpa to Marissa and Josh Ramsey, who each brought him immense pride and joy. Jim was a dear brother to Geri, Richard, Ken, Bob, Marilyn, and Jeanette. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings Ted, Betty, Chuck, Mary Jane, Pat, and Michael. Beloved brother-in-law of Molly, Mike and Dave; pre-deceased father-in-law David and mother-in-law Jean Hatley, in laws Dave, Brenda and Shirley. He is also lovingly remembered by a host of nieces and nephews who will miss his authenticity.
Jim married the love of his life, Carol, on August 20, 1966. Shortly after their wedding, he was drafted into the United States Army and proudly served for 2 years while being stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas. Jim ambitiously rose to the ranks of Sergeant. After his service, Jim returned home to Michigan, where he and Carol eventually planted their roots in Westland. Borman Foods was his employer for 30 years. A hard worker with determination, Jim went back to school at night to earn his high school diploma from Wayne Memorial, something he was deeply proud of. He loved his Detroit Tigers and never missed a chance to cheer on Ohio State football (despite being a lifelong Michigan resident.) Jim was truly a people person, known for his quick wit. Playful teasing and engaging in lighthearted banter were typical demonstrations of him showing how much he cared and appreciated one's friendship. In later years, Jim found great joy working as a greeter at Meijer, where customers looked forward to being welcomed by him. His friendly smile and warm presence made average days a little brighter.
Jim will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Visitation will be held on Friday, February 13, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with a service at 6:30 p.m., at Harry J. Will Funeral Home. A processional to his final resting place will begin on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. A luncheon at the funeral home will follow.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his memory to your favorite charitable organization. St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and Michigan Humane were two of Jim's favorites.
