Joan Ruth Michie

Joan Ruth Michie, age 83, of Northville, formerly of Royal Oak, Michigan, passed away on Saturday, December 6, 2025. Joan was born on March 29, 1942, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Roy and Mary Bodilly.

She was the loving mother of Jennifer (Jim) Vernier and Jeff Hancock. Cherished grandma of Payton, Devyn, and Nate.

Joan was a proud graduate of Western Michigan University, where she received a Bachelor's degree in education. Upon graduation, she spent the first years of her career with Kalamazoo Public Schools. She stepped away to focus on raising her children, and later returned to pursue her passion for education, but this time in early childhood development through her work at Tip Top Tots. Later, she dedicated herself to serving the elderly in her community by assisting with life enrichment programs at local nursing homes. She continued her love of being with people when she joined Dura Automotive and worked as a receptionist.

Joan leaves a legacy of positivity and open-mindedness. She was always willing to try new things and experience all life had to offer. Her welcoming spirit, warm smile, and sense of humor allowed her to make friends wherever she went. She enjoyed attending church and teaching Sunday School. She was a member of the Philanthropic Education Organization (P.E.O.), a sisterhood focused on advancing women’s education through scholarships, grants, and loans. She loved spending time by the water and being out in the sun, which made taking trips to the beach a favorite pastime. Reading mysteries, listening to music, and playing the piano were highlights in her day. Joan had a deep fondness for animals; they were drawn to her warmth. Although her last years were spent with dementia, her kind nature continued to shine, and she held a special place in the hearts of her caregivers.

Friends and family are invited to gather on Friday, December 12, from 11:00am to 1:00pm at Harry J Will Funeral Home, 37000 Six Mile Rd, Livonia, MI 48152, followed by a memorial service beginning at 1:00pm. A livestream of the service will be available.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Joan's memory are appreciated to Heart to Heart Hospice, who took compassionate care of her in her final years.
