I am the son of Raymond Haney. I am very sorry we didn't make it to Michigan in time to see Aunt Madeline. I was very young when I met her. I remember playing with the Tucker children. Back in the eighties my wife Waverly contacted Aunt Madeline for family addresses. Aunt Madeline struck me as a really neat person.Our thoughts are with the family at this time. In other times, other places Banjo was the name we knew her by. Few knew how it was that Madeline came by that name. It was long-time family friend Jack McGrath, back in the Big Beaver days, who first started calling her that. There was a comedian named Eddie Cantor who had a big smile and prominent, shining eyes of the kind they used to call "Banjo Eyes", and to Jack and to brothers Ray, Bob, and Dick, it was natural that their sister was not only Madeline, she was Banjo. That's what she was to me, her only younger brother. But she was more than that, far more. She was the big older sister who often was assigned to care for me, and who always cared about me. Years later, she was more like a second mother, fixing me big meals on weekends and sending me back to college with bags of food to get me through the next few days. She was even my popcorn connection, finding a source for me to buy popcorn on the cob and by the bushel that I could cook and sell at college for a dime a bag to make a couple dollars--and then not even let me pay for the bushels of corn. Even later, she was perhaps my most enthusiastic cheerleader, praising my smallest accomplishments as if worthy of a Nobel Prize. She was many, many things to many, many people: mother, sister, wife, grandmother, friend, sympathetic listener, stern counselor when it was called for, and always a warm audience with a hearty laugh and a great story of her own to share in return. She set a high bar for everyone in the courage, the endurance, the grace with which she met head-on challenges that would have buckled the knees of strong men. She was resilient and she was tough. She was one terrific lady. A most special person. And I cherish every moment, every memory she created for me. I will carry Banjo in my heart every day of my life. Bill Haney
