Mary Ann Cross (née Hinchey), age 102, of Royal Oak, Michigan, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on January 21, 2026, surrounded by love, with her daughter Maureen and son-in-law Kevin at her side. Born on October 19, 1923, in Detroit, Michigan, Mary Ann lived a long and full life defined by faith, family, humor, strength, and deep devotion to those she loved.
Mary Ann was married to the love of her life, John Edward Cross. Together, they built an extraordinary family and a life rooted in love and faith. She was a devoted wife and mother who had eight children in nine years — a remarkable testament to her resilience, determination, and unwavering commitment to her family. John preceded her in death, and their 77th wedding anniversary would have been celebrated on January 22, 2026, reunited in eternal love.
Mary Ann was a twin and is now reunited in heaven with her beloved sister, Anna Marie Wood (Hinchey). She was also preceded in death by her parents, Anna Hielig Hinchey and Earl Hinchey; her sons John Michael Cross and Daniel Thomas Cross; all of whom she dearly missed throughout her life.
She is survived by her loving children: Mark Cross; Colleen Seestadt; Margaret “Peggy” (Jim) Kelly; Therese Cross; Gerald “Jerry” (Susan) Cross; and Maureen (Kevin) Ayotte. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews, all of whom were a great source of pride and joy in her life.
A devout Catholic with unwavering faith, Mary Ann lived her life guided by prayer, trust in God, and a deep belief in eternal life. Her faith was not only spoken but lived daily, offering comfort and strength to those around her.
Mary Ann was known for her sharp wit, unapologetic sarcasm, and lively sense of humor — she had absolutely no filter, something her family will remember fondly and miss dearly. She was an exceptional homemaker and gracious hostess who created countless cherished memories during holidays and family gatherings around her table.
She loved playing golf, and especially loved trips to Las Vegas, where she famously celebrated her 100th birthday and outlasted even the youngest members of the family at the blackjack table — a moment that perfectly captured her vitality, joy, and zest for life.
Mary Ann Cross leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, faith, and strength that will live on through the many generations she helped shape. She will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and joyfully entrusted to God’s eternal care.
