Paul was born in Petoskey, Michigan on December 27, 1934 the son of Edward F. Staffeld and Nora (Hebert) Staffeld.
Joan was born in Detroit, Michigan on March 7, 1934 in Detroit the only child of Emmett and Mary Louise (O’Malley) Fitzgerald. As a young child, Paul and his siblings lived in Charlevoix. After his mother’s death and dad’s marriage to Ruth, his family moved and settled in Detroit where he proudly attended St. Gregory High School.
Joan grew up on Westmoreland in Detroit. She was surrounded by many aunts and uncles who, along with her parents, immigrated from Canada to find work in the auto industry. Joan attended Our Lady of Mercy High School where she enjoyed lifelong friendships.
After Paul and Joan met, Joan said she knew he was the man for her after he placed a love note with his homemade pickles on her porch. They wed in 1999.
Paul was a dimensional analysis technician/engineer for Ford Motor Company and a proud Army Veteran. He enjoyed home projects, reading, and a good party. He excelled at golf and loved everything about the game. Taking good care of Joan as her health challenges increased in recent years, was the most honorable and important part of his life.
Joan managed a large apartment complex in Farmington for many years. She loved to celebrate and share her Irish heritage, she loved to cook, read, play cards, and enjoyed an afternoon White Russian (or two or three).
As life-long devoted Catholics, Paul and Joan were members of St. Gerald church in Farmington. They were patriotic, generous, and fiercely loyal to their Lord.
They are survived by their children Kathleen (Ken) Darish, Michael (Nancy) Mastantuono, Charles (Denise) Staffeld, Laura (Ray) Ingham, and Brian Staffeld (Nubia), grandchildren Megan (Dylan) Morrow, Carter (Chelsea) Staffeld, Christopher (Ganna) Mastantuono, Brooke (Jake) Staffeld Schafer, Charlie (Kate) Staffeld, and great grandchildren Michael Mastantuono, Mira Mastantuono, Gavin Schafer, Bennett Schafer, and Terry Staffeld. Paul is also survived by half-sisters, Kathryn (Jerry) Bryan, Margaret Staffeld, and Vicki (Rocco) Pisto.
Thank you to Paul and Joan’s special friends who helped them, particularly during these last months when their health declined - Trisha, Bill, Terry and many more from Farmington Village, Heartland Hospice staff, and the Halsted Place Gateway staff. They could not have been more loved and better cared for.
In addition to their parents, Paul is also preceded in death by his sisters Marcheta (Dick) Fritz and Marcella (Robert) LaReau.
