

Richard Lyall Tomalty, age 91 of Franklin (Nashville), Tennessee, formerly of Northville, Michigan, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on March 11, 1935, in Detroit to his beloved parents, Lyall and Gladys Tomalty.
Richard was the devoted and loving husband of Elaine Tomalty for 64 wonderful years. Together, they built a beautiful life centered around love, laughter, family, and adventure. He was the cherished father of Kristin Anderson and Jill Tomalty, and the proud grandfather of Benjamin (Eliana) Anderson. Richard will also be deeply missed by his many dear friends, extended family members, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Known affectionately by many nicknames, including “Sir Rich,” “Dick,” “Papa,” “Daddy,” “Paw,” and “Popalty,” Richard had a personality that left a lasting impression everywhere he went. His quick wit, warm sense of humor, and playful spirit brought joy to countless lives.
Richard proudly earned his PhD from the University of Michigan, always cheering “Go Blue!” throughout his life. He dedicated over 30 years of service to Schoolcraft College as a college counselor, while also teaching classes and mentoring students whose lives were forever impacted by his kindness and wisdom.
Music was one of Richard’s greatest passions. A talented musician, he played the trumpet and guitar and sang professionally for many years. He also loved traveling and was proud to have visited all 50 states, along with many destinations throughout Europe and Canada. Richard was an avid hunter, a loyal fan of Detroit sports teams, and a proud veteran of the United States Navy, where he honorably served for six years.
Richard loved animals and had a special fondness for his daughters’ and grandson’s dogs. He and Elaine especially enjoyed going out for date nights, trying new restaurants, and spending quality time together. After recently moving to Tennessee, Richard embraced the beauty and charm of his new home while enjoying precious time close to family. He was also a longtime devoted member of Ward Church.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, June 7, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at 12:00 p.m at Harry J Will Funeral Home:,37000 Six Mile Rd., Livonia, MI 48152. Richard will be laid to rest with honor on Monday, June 8, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Great Lakes National Cemetery, 4200 Belford Rd, Holly, MI 48442.
Memorial donations can be made in his honor to the Lyall and Gladys Tomalty Music Scholarship at Schoolcraft College.
Richard’s love for family, his humor, music, intelligence, and adventurous spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
