Andrew Schewtschenko, better known to everyone as Deek, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, October 25, 2025, in London, Ontario, after a courageous three-year battle with cancer. He faced every challenge with quiet strength, humour, and resilience — and when his time came, he left this world with his loving siblings by his side.
Deek was a simple man who lived a simple life, and that’s exactly how he liked it. He found joy in the little things — a day at the cottage, a fishing line in the water, a beer in hand, and good company to “shoot the shit” with. He loved nature, family, and friends, and had a wicked sense of humour that could fill any room with laughter. His quick wit and memorable one-liners will be fondly repeated for years to come.
Born on September 30, 1967 — the same year the Toronto Maple Leafs last won the Stanley Cup — Deek loved to remind everyone that he was born the year they won and would die the year they’d win again. Turns out, he might’ve gotten his teams mixed up, because Deek was a true Blue Jays fan through and through. “Go Jays Go!” — fittingly, they’ll win the World Series the year he left us. Wrong sport, right spirit.
Deek leaves behind his loving siblings: Olga Lysyk (her late husband Paul), Paul Schewtschenko (Olena), and is predeceased by his brother Fred (Oksana). He will be deeply missed by his nephews and nieces — Andrew, Slavko, Ala, Matthew, Michael, Taisa, and AJ — and his cherished godchild, Max Lysyk.
Being a simple man, Deek asked that he be cremated and for everyone to have a party — on him — to celebrate his life. As he loved summer and being outdoors, this celebration will be held at a later date.
Lydia and John Schewtschenko await Deek with open arms, along with Fred and Paul — keeping the beer cold and the cards close at hand.
Deek will be remembered for his laughter, loyalty, and light-hearted nature — a man who made every gathering brighter, every story funnier, and every day a little lighter.
