Carey-Zimmer, Bridget
(1934 - 2024) Carey-Zimmer, Bridget passed away peacefully on Friday, April 5th, 2024, at the age of 89-years-old at the Mount Hope Centre for Long Term Care in London, Ontario. She led a long and fulfilling life, and she will be sorely missed.
Bridget was born on July 26th, 1934, in the rural hamlet of Ballymacarthur near Greencastle, Donegal, Ireland. After graduating from Thornhill College in Derry at the age of eighteen, she went on to study and work as a nurse midwife with the obstetric flying squads in England until October 1958, when she immigrated to London, Ontario.
Bridget continued her nursing career at Westminster and Victoria Hospitals. She met her husband, a fellow immigrant, and they married in 1960 starting a family of four children shortly thereafter. Later in 1991, she graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Social Sciences.
Bridget is predeceased by her beloved parents Rose and James Carey, as well as all her siblings: Johnny, Rose, Sarah, and Agnes. Bridget is survived by her husband of 62 years, Rudolf (Rudy) Zimmer; her children: Rudolf (Rudy) Zimmer Jr (Suzanne), Michelle Smart (Tom), Bridget Huston (Dave), and Cecile O’Neill (Dave); ten grandchildren: Andrew (Jadyn James) and Liam Zimmer; Meghan and Madeline (Ryan Pritchard) Smart; Erik, Jake, Riley, and Levi Huston; Charlotte and Jude O’Neill; and a great-grand-daughter: Odze Zimmer. She is lovingly remembered by her sister-in-law, Hannelore Christa Zimmer.
Bridget dedicated her life to being a kind and loving mother, an accomplished artist and writer, as well as a keen observer of life. Her greatest personal achievement was to create a welcoming home for both her family and random strangers. She strongly supported and encouraged her children to succeed in all aspects of life.
Special thanks to Mildred Best for her friendship and personal devotion to our mother’s care, as well as the staff on the fourth floor of St. Mary’s at Mount Hope. On Friday, April 12th, 2024, visitation will begin at 9 AM followed by the funeral starting at 10 AM both at St. Peter's Basilica (196 Dufferin Ave) with burial at 11 AM in St. Peter's Cemetery (806 Victoria St).
