Audrey Alberta Bailey, known to most as Gramma, was born July 6, 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio to Herbert and Ethel Schultz. Audrey had two older sisters, Betty Cunningham and Harriet Hayes, and one younger brother, Herbert Schultz. Times were tough in the 20’s and 30's and raising four children in the depression wasn't easy for her mother. Audrey only completed school through junior high, as she was needed to help with the family income. As a teen, Audrey was a fantastic swimmer and won several medals in her competitions. Following swimming, she ventured into roller derby. What a skater she was!
In 1940, Audrey met the love of her life, Henry Bailey. They eloped to Kentucky after only three months of dating, and as they say, "the rest is history.” They were married for 64 and a half years. Their marriage brought them three wonderful children, Dale, Mary Lou, and Lynn. The family moved to Long Beach, California in 1952. Audrey and Henry bought a brand new home on Pageantry Street where they lived, sharing life’s adventures and blessings until the day they said goodbye.
During these years in Long Beach, Audrey and Henry's family grew and became well known in the community. Their children married, and soon grandchildren were running all around. They traveled the entire United States in a motorhome and minivan. Before long, Audrey and Henry were blessed with great-grandchildren and eventually, two great-great grandchildren. Audrey adored her family and never hesitated to tell them multiple times that she loved them. Her favorite thing to do was to spend time with family and friends; just enjoying each other’s company.
Audrey passed away July 24, 2013 at the age of 91. Her husband and love of her life for 64 years, Henry Bailey, preceded her in death, as did as her sons-in law, Robert Smith and Michael O’Neil. Audrey is survived by her children Dale (Sandy) Bailey, Mary Lou Smith, Lynn (Glenn) Branson, along with 6 grandchildren, their spouses, 15 great-grandchildren and 2 spouses, 2 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, and wonderful friends. Audrey will forever be remembered for her loving, spunky ways, her sense of humor, and her mischievous smile.
