

Beloved father, grandfather and friend to many, Donald W. Hawkins, passed away on January 26, 2012 in Lakewood, California. Don was a realtor in the Long Beach area for more than 40 years, retiring in 2003 to spend more time with his children and grandchildren. He was born in Minnesota, December 15, 1927 and attended University of Minnesota. After serving in the military, he moved to Long Beach, California in the early 1950's. He met his wife Margaret and they were married July 27, 1956 and were married for more than 40 years and raised 3 children together. Margaret Hawkins passed away in 2001. Don was a health and sports enthusiast, and found his home when he first moved to southern California. He loved playing beach volleyball, swimming in the ocean and riding his bike along the coast. Don was known for his love of animals, raising dogs and cats and taking in many a stray animal that needed a home. He also had a passion for gardening and took great pride in tending to his gardens as well as the gardens of his daughters in the southern California area. He also studied health and exercise and was an early evangelist on the benefits of daily exercise and a healthy diet. Don and his wife Marge were local realtors representing small businesses in the Long Beach area and mentored many entrepreneurs as they started their first restaurants or other small businesses. Don is survived by his daughters, Laura Sears, Linda Uphoff and Kathy Rodriquez; his sons-in-law, Steve Sears and Tony Uphoff; and his grandchildren Nicole Sears, Katy Rochman (Matt), Kristen Sears, Olivia Uphoff and Taylor Young. He is also survived by his beloved animals; too many dogs and cats to mention! A memorial service will be held at the home of his daughter, Laura Sears, on Saturday, January 28 at 1 pm, 4303 Woodruff Ave, Lakewood.
