Dorothy May Young was born on September 10, 1925 in Los Angeles, California to Viola Tierney Meserole and William Dalivand Meserole. She spent her youth growing up in the Los Angeles area. As a child, with the encouragement of her father, Dorothy aspired to be a child actress – entertainer. This dream served her imagination well, throughout her life. We have all been entertained by her imaginative stories.
In 1942 Dorothy graduated from Dorsey High School and patiently waited for her future husband to return from the Pacific after the end of World War II. Paul contacted Dorothy before he returned home and proposed. Dorothy accepted the proposal and they were married in 1945.
Paul and Dorothy moved into a small apartment behind her parents house while they both looked for jobs and, eventually, could get a place of their own. Before that happened, along came their first son, Jim. Then in 1950, they found a home that they could afford in a new city named Lakewood. They bought their first and only home in Lakewood and set down roots. Paul went to work for the Los Angeles Police Dept. and Dorothy started a long career with the Bank of America. After a couple years they had their second son, Tom.
Dorothy and her family spent the following years enjoying many experiences. Dorothy developed a reputation of being a second Mom to all of Jim and Tom’s friends and the go to person when they had problems or concerns. As their Mother, she was always there for Jim and Tom, unfailingly putting her family first.
Paul passed away in 1999. His loss was devastating to Dorothy but she bounced back, creating a life for herself. She found a circle of friends and activities at the Weingard Senior Center, where she went daily. In addition, Dorothy found herself with 4 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Dorothy loved her grand and great children, showering them with the attention and love that she had always shown her family.
Dorothy passed away on October 23, 2013 of many debilitating conditions but not without the same kind of fight and enthusiasm that she had displayed throughout her life. She will be sorely missed, always loved, and never forgotten.
