I wanted to be here today to say goodbye to my brother Gilbert, but unfortunately I can only be present in spirit and in the words of this letter. In the bible it states: To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under the heaven, a time to be born, and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill and a time to heal; a time to break down and a time to build up; a time to weep and a time to laugh; a time to mourn and a time to dance....{Ecclesiastes 3:1-4.
Gilbert was born in 1957 and for 54 years he brought every type of emotion one could experience to our family because you can see on one hand Gilbert could be one of the most loveable people you could ever be around. If you ever needed something fixed he would be the first one who would drop what he was doing and use his mechanical abilities to help you out. That’s just who he was. On the other hand he would be the first one to admit that he was not a perfect man (and we know there is nobody perfect except God), but Gilbo, my mom called him Blacky, he would somehow find a way to disappoint you to where you would want to be mad at him. You would not stay there for long because despite all of his frailties and faults there was something about Gilbert that you could not help but Love.
Even though I have not seen him in many years I would hear that likeable spirit that I grew up hearing over the phone and for those 15 minutes I would feel a sense of freedom because I knew I was talking to someone who genuinely cared for my soul and I know that everybody that is here today cared for Gilbert and he’s sorely going to be missed but as sad as this day is I know for certain that Gilbert is experiencing the joys of heaven right now. Not because of anything he said or did but because one day he put his faith and trust in the one who conquered death and that is Jesus. The same one who when Laserus died he told Mary in John 11:23-26 –“Thy brother shall rise again. Martha said unto him I know that he shall use again in the resurrection at the last day”. Jesus said unto her, “I am the resurrection, and life- he that believeth in me, though he were dead yet shall he live and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die, believeth thou this?” and when you believe this that is in the testimony of the risen savior, then you can be assured no matter where you may find yourself in life you can be confident that God – the bible states will be our God forever and ever. He will be our guide even unto death (PS 48:14)
In other words the Lord was with Gilbert all the days of his Christian life even until the very end because in god’s word he said “ I will never leave thee nor forsake thee and nothing will ever separate us from the love of god” as much as we loved Gilbert the lord loved him more and if Gilbert could tell you anything today he would tell you that he is ok but more importantly I believe he would tell us that we need to believe that Jesus died and rose again that is if we ever want to see him again. The bible says in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 but I would not have you to be ignorant brethren concerning them which are asleep that ye sorrow not even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus dies and rose again even so them also which sleep in Jesus will god bring with him. For this we say unto you by the lord of the lord that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout with the voice of the arch angel and with the trump of god and the dead in Christ shall rise first. Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the lord in the air and so shall we ever be with the lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words
I hope that these scriptures and my memories of Gilbert have brought a sense of comfort to your hearts today and so Gilbert I love you and am going to miss you. I am going to miss that big smile of yours but one day we are going to see each other in heaven. God bless you
Love
Mario
