Dr. Robert (Bob) Walter Cleveland. Beloved husband and father, Dr. Robert W. Cleveland, passed away quietly in his sleep Friday, June 4. He will be greatly and lovingly missed by his devoted wife, Kathleen Marie (Terwilliger) of 57 years, his four children, Cathy Beth Cleveland Hooper (Steve), Jeanette Cleveland (Kevin Murphy), Bobette Cleveland Slawson (Mike), and Robert Walter, Jr. (Nadine), and nine grandchildren, Steven Hooper Jr. (Dr. Laura), Dr. Catherine Hooper, Collette Hooper, Kathleen Murphy, Michael Murphy, Alysse Slawson, Annette Slawson, Michelle Slawson, and Antoinette Cleveland. Dr. ‘Bob’, as he was called, practiced pediatrics in Long Beach for over 35 (1957-1992) years. He was one of the last of the independent practitioners. He was devoted to his patients often spending extra time with them during office hours and visiting his babies in one of the three hospitals in Long Beach. He served as President of the Long Beach Pediatric Society and was a long-standing member of the East Long Beach Lions Club.
Bob was the second son born to Florence Evelyn (Hammond) and Henry Clay Cleveland of Hammond, IN. He attended both Indiana University and DePauw University. He served twice in the US Navy; once in the enlisted ranks as a corpsman during WWII followed by service as an officer and physician during the Korean War. Between the wars, he earned his medical degree from Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia PA. He completed his residency at King’s County Hospital in Brooklyn, NY.
Bob was most proud of his family, his children, his grandchildren, his brother, Dr. Henry C. (Hank) Cleveland (Patricia) of Denver, CO , his sister, Florence Jeanette (Fred , deceased, 1984) Donnersberger, of Munster, IN/Dallas, TX, and numerous nieces and nephews . Nearly all his holidays were spent traveling to every part of the country to visit family. A man of intense compassion and feeling, fiercely independent, honest and honorable, practical, conservative….our hero and life model. We miss you, Bob, Dad, and Grandpa.
