OBITUARY

Carole Hyman Cambon

27 July, 1933 – 27 April, 2022
IN THE CARE OF

Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park & Mortuary

Carole Hyman Cambon, an attorney and novelist, died peacefully at her home in Beverly Hills, CA on April 27, 2022.

Carole was born on July 27, 1933 to Beatrice Gerson Hyman, a homemaker, and Julius Hyman, a real estate developer. She was raised in New Orleans and graduated from Isidore Newman School. Carole received her bachelor’s degree summa cum laude from the University of California at Los Angeles, where she was a member of Sigma Delta Tau and was inducted into the honorary society Phi Beta Kappa. Carole also received a Master’s in English from UCLA.

Carole and her first husband, Herbert Burstein moved back to her home town of New Orleans shortly after their marriage in Los Angeles. Together, they raised their daughter Cynthia and built and sold custom houses in the Aurora and Tall Timbers subdivisions of Algiers.

Carole served as President of the New Orleans Chapter of the Brandeis Women’s Book Group, and was an active member of the National Council of Jewish Women and the “Culture Club” book group, founded by her mother, Beatrice Hyman.

In the mid-1970s, Carole earned her law degree at Loyola Law School in New Orleans, where she was a member of the Law Review. Following her admission to the Louisiana Bar, Carole served as a public indigent defender and later as a mediator. In 1982, she married her second husband, attorney Leon Ferrier Cambon. Together they enjoyed traveling the world and eating at the finest restaurants.

Carole was also a novelist. She and her friend Carolyn Levy co-wrote Regina, a murder-mystery set in New Orleans, published in 2016.

Following Leon’s death in 2000 and Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Carole returned to Los Angeles to be close to her daughter’s family. She reunited with her UCLA sorority sisters, and became an active member of the Los Angeles Plato Society.

Carole was known for her intelligence and sharp wit. Her entertaining commentary and impish grin will be missed.

Carole is survived by her daughter Cynthia Burstein Waldman (Vincent), grandson Jesse Waldman, brother Julius Hyman, Jr. (Roberta), nieces and great-nephews, as well as Leon’s children: Edward E. Cambon (Karen), Susan C. Wegmann (Dirk), Paul F. Cambon (Susan), Donna C. Stuart (Rob) and Janet Leigh C. England (Mike), and their families.

An online memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 15, 2022 at 3 p.m. Pacific Time (5 p.m. Central Time). For online service details please contact Cynthia at [email protected].
