I was blessed to have Vira as my second mother. People were often surprised to hear about our beautiful relationship because this was quite uncommon. “La suegra” has a tough reputation. Vira was my wise advisor and my comadre. I remember as a newlywed bride, she took me shopping to the Roadium Swap Meet to ensure I got all the cooking utensils. Vira guided me in choosing the best ones. Some special moments I shared with her were the summers in Ayotlan, Jalisco. I loved watching and learning Vira do her magic in the kitchen. It was an art that Vira easily mastered. She was always willing to share her delicious recipes and caringly guided me during my weak attempts to replicate them. Vira made Ayotlan feel like home. Patricia and Hector were away for a month and they rarely got homesick. She was there to help them learn how to ride their donkey, Filemon or to make them hot chocolate and posole during evening rainstorms. Vira’s gift was to make any place feel like home. I know you are with God. I pray that you give us the strength to continue. Some day we will see you again and heaven will feel like home again, because of you.
