Dan was born in Louisville, Kentucky on May 19, 1949 to Durwood and Edith (Moorman) Gwinn, who predeceased him. He was a proud 1967 graduate of Waggener High School and briefly attended Western Kentucky University before discovering that he was better suited to go straight into the business world.
In partnership with his brother, Gil, Dan owned Matthew Machinery Company, which specialized in the sale of metal industrial equipment. After Matthew Machinery was acquired by Gosiger, Inc. of Dayton, Ohio, Dan stayed on as president of the Louisville division. Later, he and Gil teamed up again to start Asset Solutions, Inc. focusing on the worldwide sales of used metal machinery and equipment. Dan’s ability to broker a deal was bar none. He was a master negotiator, putting his natural gift of gab to great use. Dan was also a member of Southeast Christian Church and a Kentucky Colonel.
In business and in his personal life, Dan was a person of integrity and generosity, always looking for opportunities to give of his time, talents, and treasures, whether it be to help immediate family, friends, or those whom he met wherever he was. Dan never met a stranger. His natural warmth, genuine interest in others, and joyful sense of humor were gifts from God that Dan happily shared throughout his earthly life.
Dan is survived by his wife, Dana Martin Gwinn, whom he adored with all his heart. Dan and Dana built a beautiful life together of abiding love and deep faith and would have celebrated their 30th anniversary in December of 2025. He is also survived by his three wonderful children: Dana Gwinn Hoben and Chanea Gwinn of Louisville, and Thomas Gwinn (Allie) of Corydon, Indiana; grandchildren Brendan, Aidan, Malayah, Amarah, Willow, and Scarlett; his brother Gil Gwinn (Judy); and many, many loving friends, all of whom will miss his steady presence, wisdom, and inherent goodness.
A visitation will take place on Sunday, August 24th from noon until 3:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service celebrating Dan’s life, at Arch L. Heady and Son Funeral Home, 7410 Westport Road. Expressions of sympathy may be made in Dan’s name to the American Cancer Society or Hosparus.
