Franklin D. “Frank” Helton, of Fairdale, Kentucky, passed away peacefully with family by his side following a lengthy illness, on February 2, 2026, at the ripe old age of 88. Born on February 1, 1938, in Louisville, Kentucky, Frank lived a full and vibrant life rooted in dedication to family, service, and community.
Frank received his early education at Manly Junior High and Louisville Male High School where he played the Sousaphone in the ROTC Marching Band. He then continued his studies later in life, in his fifties, at Sullivan College, earning an associate’s degree in accounting.
He went on to build a long and steady career in the trucking industry as a dispatcher, where he worked for over forty years. After leaving the field, Frank brought his trademark humor and warmth to Jefferson County Public Schools, where he became affectionately known as the “Bearded Lunchroom Lady” at Jacob Elementary School.
Frank was proud to have served eight years in the Kentucky National Guard. His commitment to service extended beyond the military. He was raised to sublime degree of Master Mason in Compass Lodge 223, and was a member in good standing of Robinson-Plumb Lodge 266 F&AM. His faith as a Baptist was also an important part of his life.
Frank’s greatest joy came from the love he shared with his family. He is survived by his lovely bride of 66 years, Bonnie Sue Doss Helton; his son James “Jamie” Helton; his daughter, Michelle Wilcox and her husband, Kelly; and his cherished grandchildren, Taylor White and her husband Nick, Alexander Helton, and MacKenzie Wilcox; as well as several nieces, nephews, brothers, and sisters in law.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George Washington Helton and Etta Marie Dugay Helton; his brother, George “Buck” Helton; his sisters, Daphne Helton, Dorothy Cunagin, and Etta Ruth Horvath; and his beloved in-laws, W.B. “Dub” and Pauline Doss.
In accordance with Frank’s wishes, he has been cremated and no funeral service will be held.
May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for memorial contributions in Frank’s name to be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at https://events.alz.org/fundraisers/jameshelton
