

He was born December 7, 1927 in Decatur, AL, as the second generation of American-born Fischers of this German family. His father moved the family first to Memphis, TN, then to Louisville, following the jobs of the L&N Railroad.
Fred met his future wife of 61 years, the former Peggy Thompson, while both were students at Southern Middle School. He graduated from Male High School in 1945 1/2, graduating the half year as was the practice during World War II. Fred followed his brother Buddy in naval service but saw the war end while he was in basic training. After an honorable discharge in 1948, Fred worked for the U.S. Postal Service and attended two semesters at U of L before starting a family and beginning his career with the U. S. Treasury (A.T.F.) as an inspector agent, from which he retired in 1986.
He served his community as president of the Beechmont Neighborhood Association, where he led the effort to create the Beechmont Community Center; founding member of the Iroquois High Booster Club; committee member of Boy Scout Troop 65; officer of the Bourbon Credit Union and eventually treasurer of the City of Old Brownsboro Place.
Fred was a great storyteller, a bourbon lover and a fan of the University of Kentucky Wildcats. He is preceded in death by his parents, Etta Mae and Henry C. Fischer; brother, Henry C. "Buddy" Fischer Jr. (Ginny); sisters, Ruth Triest (M.L.) and Jacqueline Fischer; daughter, Janis Fischer Wahrmund (Don); and granddaughter, Susan Janelle Wahrmund.
He is survived by wife, Peggy Lois Thompson Fischer; sons, Greg Fischer (Dee Gee) and John Fischer (Tracy); and granddaughters, Jacqueline Wahrmund, Sarah Fischer Thomas (Andy), Anna Fischer, Greer Fischer and Grace Fischer.
A celebration of Fred's life is 1 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Arch L Heady and Son Funeral Home, 7410 Westport Road, with private burial in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Monday and 11 a.m. -1 p.m. Tuesday.
