Gilberto was born on September 30, 1953 in Havana, Cuba. He graduated as a mechanical engineer from CUJAE. After graduation, he worked as a professor at CUJAE and ISPET, both universities in Havana, Cuba. He later worked as a methodologist and went on to serve as a National Methodology Inspector in the Ministry of Education in Cuba.
Gilberto was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who gave all of himself to help others. His strength and optimism were an inspiration to all. Gilberto will be deeply missed by his family and friends and remembered with love.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Eleuterio González and Basilia Díaz. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 33 years, Mercedes; his children, Ingrid (Ricardo) González and Carmen (Terry) Newkirk; his grandchildren, Ricardo, Sophia Aurora, Lucas Alexander, and Catherine Elizabeth; his parents-in-law, Lazaro Gordillo and Zunilda Requeiro; his brother-in-law, Lazaro Gordillo; his sister-in-law, Angela (Vincent) Versluis; and his great niece Esther Aurora.
Visitation will be held at Evergreen Funeral Home, 4623 Preston Hwy., Louisville, Kentucky on Thursday, September 13, 2018 from 2-5pm, with the Memorial service at 5pm. Visitation will continue from 6-7pm.
