He was a retired member of the International Brotherhood of Long Shoreman Union as the Dock Foreman and a Navy veteran.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine Burnette Hawkins; and his daughter, Barbara Simpson.
He is survived by his stepsons, Mike Johns (Jeanette) and David Johns; daughter, Pat Knoche; 10 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Mr. Hawkins's life will be held 1 p.m. Friday at the Southern Home of Arch L. Heady & Son, 3601 Taylor Blvd., with the entombment to follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Thursday, July 9, 2009.
