

late Frank and Alpha Wheeler Smith of Louisville, died November 12, 2011. Helen celebrated
her 92 years July 30, 2011. She was born in Louisville to the late Horner Abney Brown and Ruby Wheeler of Louisville. Helen attended Fern Creek School and Georgetown College following her husband’s death
during World War II. She was a member of Buechel Park Baptist Church where she played
the organ. She attended Southern Seminary in Louisville and served as children’s director at
First Baptist Church in Dallas, TX, South Main Baptist Church, Houston, TX, First Baptist Church in Tulsa, OK, First Baptist Church in Shreveport, LA and Fern Creek Baptist Church and Parkland Baptist Church in
Louisville. After she retired she worked at the Kentucky Baptist Children’s Home in Louisville.
Her life was devoted to children’s training in God’s Word and guiding at risk adolescents.
She is survived by her only son, Dennis Wheeler Smith (Carolyn) of Columbia, MO;
three grandchildren and their spouses, Nathan and Angela Smith of New York, David and
Kim Smith of Columbia, Natalie and Brendon Kenny of New York; six great-grandchildren,
Emerson Marie, Madison Rae, Zachary Wheeler, Charlie Kate, twins, Otto Lee And
Reece Wheeler Smith. Natalie and Brendon are expecting Helen’s seventh grandchild in
March 2012, a boy; she is also survived by her sisters, Midge Tennill and Cathryn Kaiser of
Louisville and Cleeta Jo Fisher of Houston, TX; her in-laws, Eugene and Thelma Smith
and Leon and Phyllis Smith of Louisville; and 14 nephews and nieces. A Celebration of Life service will be conducted noon Wednesday, November 16, 2011 in the chapel of Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Road, with interment to follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation will be held after 10 a.m. until the service time Wednesday .
