
Michael Scott Sumner, DMD, passed away peacefully on February 18th, 2026, in Louisville, KY. He was born in Knoxville, TN, on November 24th, 1957. Michael grew into a kind and intelligent man, cherished by all who knew him.
Michael's academic journey began at Vanderbilt University, from which he graduated in 1979. Continuing his passion for learning and helping others, he attended the University of Louisville School of Dentistry. Upon earning his degree and title of DMD, Michael embarked on a 35 year career in General Dentistry, earning the respect of his peers and the loyalty of the many patients whose lives he touched.
Michael's interests extended far beyond the walls of his practice. He was an enthusiastic sports fan, finding joy in the thrills of basketball and football. He was very active during his high school years; playing baseball and basketball. His athleticism was evident, continuing to play soccer long after his academic endeavors were complete. He also occasionally enjoyed water skiing, snow skiing, and was known to have practiced Taekwondo.
His love for animals, especially his treasured cats, was well known among his many friends and family. These pets were not just animals to Michael; they were companions who enriched his life with unspoken bonds of loyalty and affection.
Michael could best be described as outgoing, extroverted, and gregarious. He fondly enjoyed the company of his many friends and maintained all his relationships, being that they all meant so much to him.
Michael was preceded in death by his father, Jack Sumner; his grandparents; and several aunts and uncles.
Michael is survived by his mother, Martha Scent; his brother, Mark Sumner (Karen); and a host of cousins, extended family, and lifelong friends who will keep his memory alive.
