He graduated from Sullivan High School and attended the University of Missouri, Columbia, Missouri, and continued his education at the University of Tampa, where he received a B.S. in Business with a minor in Economics and Accounting. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Social Fraternity, Yearbook Staff Member, Delo Forensic Society, Captain, Debate Team, and Dean's List.
He continued his education at the University of Florida School of Law where he received a Juris Doctor of Law. In Law School he received Book Awards for Insurance and Evidence, was a Member of Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity Office of Historian, Speakers Bureau, Placement Committee, Book Store Committee JMBA Luncheon Committee, Member, and John Marshall Bar Association. He was a placed on the rolls of retired members of the Florida Bar and commended by the Board of Governors on behalf of the entire legal profession for distinguished and honorable service. He was a member of the Ulema Scholastic Society and Delta Sigma Roe Honorary Speech Fraternity.
His career brought him to Louisville, Kentucky where he served as a senior tax attorney with the U.S. Treasury, Office of Regional Counsel until his retirement.
He was a member of Beargrass Christian Church where he served as Deacon, sang in the church choir and along with his wife did the music for the Round Robin Sunday School Class. He was a family man and enjoyed travel, tennis, hiking and walks with his wife. He will be missed by his wife the former Betty Jane Clement of Harrisonville, MO and his son Matthew Griswold Owens of Louisville, Kentucky. Remaining family members are his sister, Georgeann Wisner of EI Dorado Springs, Missouri, brother Doug Johnston of Sullivan, Missouri as well as five nephews and one niece.
