He was born on August 22, 1927 to Louis E. and Goldie Hadler McCormack. Bob was a witness to nearly a century of history. He grew up in Indiana, lived in the Dust Bowl, survived the Great Depression, and joined the U.S. Navy at only 17-years-old during WWII to serve on the destroyer U.S.S. Cone in the Atlantic.
Bob worked at General Electric in Finance for 40 years, retired in 1987, and then went to work at H & R Block. In 1990 he and his wife, Sandra, opened a gourmet kitchen store in Oxmoor Center, which they closed in 2003. For the next few years he worked for the Courier Journal. He finally returned to H & R Block, once again doing taxes until he was 94.
He was a Charter Member of Hurstbourne Baptist Church, where he served faithfully in many capacities. He sang in the Worship Choir, rang handbells in the Hurstbourne Chimes, and taught 3-year-olds in Sunday School. Alongside his wife, Sandra, he contributed to the church’s music ministry, designing and building sets for Christmas and Spring children’s musicals. He faithfully stood by her side and turned pages as she played the organ for church services.
Bob’s community spirit extended beyond the church. He volunteered as a police officer in Douglas Hills and as a firefighter in Middletown. He was an avid model railroad collector and enjoyed participating as a ham radio operator. He also grew test roses and participated in a bowling league for many years.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Paul Richard McCormack. He is survived by his loving wife, Sandra, of 43 years, his children: Michael (Valerie), Dale (Sue), Mark (Gayle), Jonathan, Jennifer Schultheis, and Julie Ray-Ritchie (Joe); grandchildren: Daniel McCormack (Ashley), John McCormack, David McCormack, Miranda Smallwood (Matthew), Joshua McCormack, Ashley Tabor, Amanda Tabor, Roland McCormack, Christy Jones, Andrew Jones, Lauren Leach (John), Angel Tant, Jade Tant, Gannon Ritchie, and Beckett Ritchie, as well as numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
The family expresses gratitude for the compassionate care provided by his primary care doctor, Kelly Smith, and his therapists, Jon and Dr. A.J., who came faithfully multiple times a week to care for him. We also thank the wonderful doctors, nurses, and staff at Baptist Health for their conscientious care. We are also deeply appreciative of the depth of love and support offered by the team of pastors, as well as Muan Lian, from Hurstbourne Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of donations to the Worship Ministry or Renew Campaign of Hurstbourne Baptist Church.
