The wise old sage and campfire poet has spun his final tale, hiked to the trail’s end, ascended from the peak, and left this mortal coil for the heavens above.
For decades Ron was an innovative leader in the Boy Scouts of America, designing programs that taught hundreds of youth and adults about nature conservation, wilderness survival, leadership training, mountaineering, and backpacking, while instilling values of integrity, compassion, and respect. Ron was awarded the high honors of Silver Beaver by the BSA in 1988.
Ron was a devout Christian and led men's groups, Bible study, and marriage counseling workshops at his various churches and he lived in those practices every day. There is no doubt, he had a welcoming party at heaven's gate as he met his savior, Jesus Christ.
Ron was a natural problem solver and astute businessman who rose to executive leadership, driving the adoption of innovative manufacturing techniques that pioneered new levels of efficiency.
Proudly serving his country in the United States Coast Guard alongside his brother, Thomas Van Dyke, and his best friend, Rick Fischer, his love for his country was deep, and his belief in the American Dream never wavered.
Ron leaves a legacy so impactful, that it can not be translated to you here. It can only be fully experienced by hearing it from those with whom he interacted. We encourage those that have fond memories of Ron to share them at his memorial and welcome items to be placed in his casket to aid him at the great swap meet in the sky.
Born in Louisville, KY to his parents George and Essie "Jo” Van Dyke, Ron was preceded in death by his wife and childhood sweetheart, Pam (Preslar) Van Dyke, his brother Thomas Van Dyke, and sister Martha Van Dyke. He is survived by his children Tracy Elias (Richard), Chris Fischer and Brent Van Dyke (fiance Alison Lucek), granddaughters Moya and Makena Fischer; his nieces and nephew, Laurie Kelly (Chris), Stacie Buren, and Jeff and Stephanie Byers; along with many cousins in the Perkins family.
As a calm leader, patient teacher, devoted Christian, and dedicated father, Ron served his family and community with a loving strength and honesty that will continue to inspire the kindness and generosity of all who knew him. Thank you for being part of his life and carrying his legacy with you.
