Samuel David Pugh was born on February 4, 1987. The third child of Doug Pugh and Mary Ann (Moores), he was known from an early age for his copper-auburn hair, quick smile, and curious nature. He had a knack for taking things apart just to understand how they worked, and he sometimes put them back together again–with parts to spare. That same curiosity and independence, along with a persistent sense of humor, shaped much of his life.
As a young man, Sam enjoyed the outdoors, including hunting and paintball where his competitive streak and love of fun were equally evident. At the age of eighteen, he followed in his father’s footsteps and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he eventually rose to the rank of sergeant. Motivated by his innate desire to protect and defend, Sam served his country with honor, completing deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan before being honorably discharged in 2012.
After his military service, Sam made his home in New Bern, North Carolina, where he built a wide circle of friends who quickly became like family. He was known for his generosity, his loyalty, and his ability to bring levity into any situation. Whether spending time around a fire pit with friends, riding his motorcycle across the country, or sharing stories with family, Sam had a way of making ordinary moments memorable. He was someone people could count on to be steady in his support, quick with a joke, and always ready to help.
Sam passed away on April 10, 2026, at the age of thirty-nine. His life was marked by service, humor, and an authentic connection to almost anyone he met. He will be remembered for the laughter he instigated and the lasting impact he had on all who knew him. He was a son, brother, uncle, and a steadying presence in his community. Among his many activities, Sam was a student of Engineering at Craven Community College where he also served on the board of the Student Veterans Association. He was also an active member of Fire & Iron Motorcycle Club.
Sam was preceded in death by his father, Doug Pugh, his beloved dog Bandit, and his maternal and paternal grandparents. He is lovingly remembered by his mother, Mary Ann Moores; his siblings, Jen (Mike) Hansert, Kari (Megan) Hanke, Justin Pugh, Ian (Charity) Pugh, Leah (Daniel) Hildreth, Kendra Moores, and Grace Moores; as well as his nieces and nephews, Joren, Ella, Aric, Elliott, Robbie, Tyler, and Nathan; and his loyal dog Smokey.
Funeral Service will be 11:30 am, Saturday, May 9, 2026, at Arch L Heady at Resthaven with Entombment to follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.
Visitation will be 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Friday, May 8, 2026 at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville, Kentucky 40218.
