Betty Jane Harris passed peacefully to be with her Lord Jesus Christ on Friday, December 20, 2024, at the age of 100, in Dallas, Texas. A grave-side service will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at 2:00pm at Resthaven Funeral Home in Lubbock, Texas, followed by a family visitation.
Betty Jane was born on March 22, 1924, in Wichita, Kansas, as the only daughter to Robert and Nellie Saurbier Brannan. Raised as the youngest of five children in Meade, Kansas, Betty Jane learned the virtue of hard work and perseverance growing up on a farm before moving to town, where her mother passed away when Betty Jane was only twelve years old. She graduated in 1942 from Meade Kansas High School and moved to Detroit with a dear friend to live in a boarding house for women, and work in the Cadillac Motor Car Factory, as a real-life “Rosie the Riveter,” riveting airplanes for the war. After returning home, she married into the Haney family and went on to have three beautiful daughters. Her husband died in 1955 and Betty Jane married Joe Kenneth Harris three years later. They moved to the South Plains of Texas.
After moving to Plainview, Texas, where she raised the “Harris girls,” and sent them off to college, Betty Jane and Joe Kenneth were blessed with a son, Ronald Mark Harris, at the age of 45, six months after her first granddaughter was born, Kelley Michelle. They moved to Atlanta, Georgia, and later McKinney, Texas, before returning to the High Plains where Joe and Betty founded Harris Agricultural Supply Company in Halfway, Texas. After Joe Kenneth’s passing in 1999, Betty Jane continued to manage HASCO for six years before retiring near her twin daughters in Tyler, Texas, at the age of 81. Betty Jane later moved in with her daughter, Charlotte, in Dallas, Texas.
Betty Jane is preceded in death by her husband, Joe Kenneth Harris, her daughters, Sharell Diane Bane and Shirley Elaine Dunfee and her granddaughter, Kelley Michelle Kavanaugh.
She is survived in death by her daughter, Charlotte Held Fletcher, her son, Ronald Mark Harris and her grandchildren: Donny, Chicki, Gabi, Joey, Max, Lauren and great grandchildren: Bayleigh, Kate, Sara, Skyler, Vaya Marie, James, John and Easton.
Family and friends are invited to join us as we remember Betty’s amazing life on Saturday, January 18, 2025 at Resthaven Funerals Home.
