Mrs. Whitmire, 94, finished her Life’s Race into the arms of Jesus Christ, March 30, 2026. She was at her residence, Artesia Healthcare, in Artesia with her son Kent holding her hands.
Rick Sullivan will officiate the service with burial following.
Evelyn was born on March 21, 1932, in Rotan, TX, the daughter of Jett Raymond George and Ova Myrtle Shreve George. Evelyn had 2 sisters, and 2 brothers: sister Belva Smith and husband Bill, Brother Forrest George and wife Dorthy, sister June Smith and husband Jack, and little brother Flint George and wife Mary.
Evelyn married the love of her life, Marvin J. Whitmire, September 1, 1951, and they spent most of their 60 marital years residing in Lubbock, Tx. Their retirement years were spent living on their 40 acres, north of Lubbock, that were God’s Blessing, “Touch of Heaven” to them.
Evelyn was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and a true friend. She had a tender compassionate, loving spirit, and her beautiful smile held true testimony of her heart. Evelyn was a gifted pianist who taught herself playing by ear at the age of 4-5 years old. During that time, her family played music and entertained on the radio for the surrounding area of Rotan, TX. She was a substitute teacher for Morton and Lubbock and then worked at Wolfe Nursery as Floral Arranger. She eventually established and operated her own shop Unique Creations in Cactus Alley, in Lubbock. Evelyn was also a creative artist. She could snap a picture on a camera and then create a near perfect painting. Those paintings later hung in her home or were given to family and friends as gifts.
Evelyn and Marvin were faithful members of Broadway Church of Christ, where they had many beloved church and family friends. They both loved The Lord and were Blessed during their time attending Broadway.
Evelyn loved and cherished her grandchildren who affectionately called her “Gran”. Gran was known for her homemade milkshakes, made in a Mason Glass jar, microwaved ham and cheese sandwiches on wax paper, fresh garden green beans spiced with black pepper, and Kool-Aid with a little sugar. She made them stick horses to run and ride around “The Place.” There are many memories of playing “Yellow Brick Road” skipping down and hiking on the cow trails. Fun times were had going to the parks to feed the ducks. There never was a dull moment. Whatever was their wish, she would give them 100% from her heart!
Evelyn enjoyed hunting arrowheads on the “Home Hill” and Pavo Mesa. I can still hear her hollering when she found a beautiful cream-colored knife blade.
In her residing years at Artesia Healthcare, Evelyn was greatly loved and her love for them was reflected in the beautiful smile of her heart. She enjoyed playing and entertaining the residents on the piano. She played old hyms from years ago during some of the facility’s in-house worship services. Her beautiful smile was evident when she crossed the finish line into Jesus Christ’s Arms! Thank You, Lord!
A final note, she had written in her directives: “A true sense of unconditional love and compassion for others is the greatest gift a father and mother can give to their children.”
A heartfelt expression of thankfulness to Artesia Healthcare for the care and love given to Mother during the seven years she resided, and a heartfelt appreciation extended to Enhabit Home Health and Hospice for the compassion and care given to Mother in her final days.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, her devoted husband, son Mark Whitmire, daughter-in-law Ellen Whitmire, wife of Kent, and all her wonderful brothers and sisters.
Evelyn is survived by her son, Kent Whitmire TYL, of Artesia, NM and her grandsons Joshua Whitmire and wife Anna, and Matthew Whitmire and wife Kaci, both of Artesia, NM, Daughter in Law Trena Whitmire, wife of Mark, of Snyder, TX, and her grandchildren Adam Whitmire and wife Amanda of Joshua, TX, Aaron Whitmire and wife Robin of Abilene, Tx, Riki Dorsett, wife Beth of Sachse, TX, Krista Shea, husband Taylor of Plano, TX, and Cassidy Whitmire, of Big Spring, TX, Grand Daughter Michelle Whitmire of Artesia, NM, and Sister-in-Law Mary George of Flowermound, TX. Evelyn is survived by 17 Great Grandchildren and 2 Great-Great Granddaughters, numerous nieces, nephews and adopted sons.
