Howard Jerry McCabe was born in Andrews, Texas, on January 2, 1960, to Helen Ann Becknell McCabe and Douglas Truitt McCabe. He went to join his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and many loved ones on May 28, 2015. Jerry was born six minutes after his twin brother, Douglas Terry McCabe, seventeen months after his oldest brother, Michael Truitt McCabe and twenty-eight months before his youngest brother, John Todd McCabe. The McCabe boys were very close in age and have remained close, best friends all of their lives. Their love and loyalty to each other is a beautiful bond that has grown stronger through the years and that will never be broken. Jerry attended Andrews schools, graduating in 1978. While in school he was an honor student and participated in band, football, track and basketball. He and his brothers worked in the “shop” of the family business, M-M Chevrolet in Andrews during the summers and enjoyed frequent trips to the McCabe ranch at Silver to hunt and visit and to the family home in Ruidoso to snow ski, enjoy family and friend gatherings and to attend the horse races. Jerry is a descendent of a prominent, pioneer Coke County ranching family. Jerry attended Texas Tech University earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology; he then attended Texas Tech University Health Science Center School of Medicine to obtain his medical degree. He was an intern in the Department of Internal Medicine and then joined the Department of Anesthesiology where he served as chief resident, then accepted a pain management fellowship position. During his anesthesiologist residency, he was a resident delegate to the Texas Society of Anesthesiologists as well as a resident member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists. Upon completion of his fellowship, Jerry joined the group of BG Anesthesia and remained with that group until March 2015. He was also a physician/partner with North Star Surgical Center. He loved his family at North Star and they supported him and loved him through his fight with prostate cancer. He served his community by serving two terms on the school board at Friendship ISD, resigning when he moved from the district. He has served on the board of People’s Bank for 11 years. Jerry was an avid outdoorsman. He hunted game and fowl with bow and rifle, fished in the lake, river or ocean and loved to snow ski. He was passionate about flying his plane and loved sharing all of this with his family and friends.
The past few years Jerry and Yvette have enjoyed their home at Lake Alan Henry, spending almost every weekend there with family, friends and a large contingent of “lake friends.” He especially enjoyed attending the small church at Justiceburg. Jerry was a Methodist and possessed a deep and abiding faith that gave him strength and comfort through several difficult times in his life, especially the last two years. Jerry’s children, Maci Ann McCabe of Lubbock, Vance Todd McCabe of Lubbock, and stepson, Shea Banister of Lubbock, were very precious and important to him. He met the love of his life, Yvette Gehrett in Lubbock and they married on June 4, 2010. Their brief marriage was very special and full of mutual enjoyment of life. Yvette supported him every step of the journey fighting the cancer. Jerry’s family would like to acknowledge their love, respect and deep appreciation for Yvette’s poise, dedication, love and loyalty to Jerry.
