In 1952, as a teenager, LaWanda’s family moved to Lubbock where she met the love of her life, Harold Long, on a blind date. In 1953 they married and from that moment forward they remained each other’s best friend. Their marriage was one of deep devotion, loyalty, and partnership that lasted decades.
As Jehovah’s Witnesses, they both had a deep love for Jehovah God and looked forward to serving him together forever on a paradise earth, where they could enjoy perfect health. They also both enjoyed traveling all over the world until 2011, when Harold preceded her in death, but the love they shared remained a defining part of LaWanda’s story.
LaWanda worked alongside her husband helping to design and decorate each home built—supporting every project, and ensuring each house became a place where families could thrive. Beyond construction, LaWanda also built a home filled with love, stability, and warmth for her own family.
She was a devoted mother to her three children, Dennis Long who preceded her in death, LaVenda Lee and husband Steve of Todos Santos B.C.S. Mexico, and LaQuita Beck of Lubbock. Her role as a grandmother brought her immense joy, and she cherished every moment spent with her grandchildren: Brandi Stansifer and husband Zac; Cliff Ross; Jordan Ross and wife Tara; and Megan Alonzo and husband Emanuel, all of Lubbock. Nothing made LaWanda prouder than watching her family grow, especially her six great-grandchildren—Lily Ross, Augie Ross, Ren Ross, Ariah Spykes, Aniyah Alonzo and Alorah Alonzo.
LaWanda was known for her strength, resilience, and determination. These qualities could also be described by her family as being ornery. LaWanda faced life head-on, never afraid of hard work, and always willing to help wherever she was needed. She was dependable, practical, and loving, offering guidance through actions rather than words. Her presence brought a sense of security and comfort to those around her.
LaWanda Jean Long will be deeply missed and forever remembered for her unwavering love, hardworking spirit, and the beautiful life she built alongside the love of her life. Her family looks forward to welcoming her back to life on a paradise earth.
